At each stage of development, young people experience different changes in psychology, perception, and needs. One question that many parents are concerned about during their journey alongside their children in building academic and personal development goals is: “Why does my child lack initiative?” In the journey of their child’s development, parental support and guidance are essential. To help their children achieve significant life goals, parents need to understand themselves and their children to fully explore their child’s potential.
Understanding Myself – The First Step to Effective Support
To be an effective support system, parents need to clearly understand their own perspectives, values, and expectations. This understanding helps parents provide advice that aligns not only with their personal desires but also with their child’s actual development and capabilities. Understanding oneself also helps parents avoid imposing their expectations on their children, creating an environment that encourages exploration and pursuit of their goals rather than living up to adult expectations. According to research from the International Institute of Educational Psychology, parental self-awareness greatly influences how they communicate and guide their children. When parents have a clear understanding of their own values and expectations, they can provide constructive guidance that aligns with the circumstances and real needs of their children.
Understanding My Child – Listening to Support
Some young people may lack initiative in various tasks, especially in their studies, while others are proactive but lack clear action goals or plans. Research has identified common reasons for this lack of initiative, such as having no clear life goals, fear of failure or anxiety, fear of criticism, lack of time management skills, and excessive expectations from parents.
Parents Supporting Their Children in Actively Pursuing Goals
In addition to understanding the reasons behind their child’s lack of motivation, parents need to develop an effective support strategy, establishing principles based on the foundation of “understanding myself, understanding my child” to accompany their child in their developmental journey. Parents should also consider professional support services, growth training courses at local educational institutions, and participating in seminars with industry experts.
